The Community Access Program (CAP) is an initiative of Industry Canada. It was developed to help provide rural and remote communities with affordable public access to the Internet and the skills to use it effectively. Access to the Information Highway will help create new and exciting opportunities for growth and jobs by providing these communities with the ability to communicate with each other, conduct business, enhance job skills or simply exchange information and ideas. History
In November, 1999, The Wentworth Community Development Council (WCDC)
decided to examine the possibility of sponsoring a C@P Site in the community.
January 19, 2000 saw a small group of interested people meet with Sheila Ross,
CREDA (Cumberland Regional Economic Development Association) staff person and
Paul Hopper, Regional Community Access Coordinator for the Northern Region.
It was found that to be eligible for a C@P Site grant, the community must have
a committee that meets regularly, provides a two year plan and proves the
ability to sustain a site. They would also have to produce letters of support
from community groups, businesses, etc. On January 26 the group met with the
executive of WCDC to discuss the information they had collected and it was
decided to invite Mr. Hopper to a meeting to speak on C@P Sites and answer
questions. In the meantime, committee members would approach community groups
and businesses to assess their level of support. The first meeting of the WCDC
C@P Site Steering committee was held on March 20, 2000 and work began on
preparing a proposal & application for submission. May 10 saw the application
for a C@P Site submitted to the Nova Scotia Technology and Science Secretariat.
The application was approved on June 23, 2000. Over the months of July and
August the Steering Committee met to make decisions regarding the purchase of
equipment and furniture. Arrival of the equipment occurred on September 23.
The official opening of the site was on November 29, 2000.Click Here to
